If you’re in the New York City area, you probably already know about the HOPE (Hackers on Planet Earth) Conference. It’s a staple of the summer conference schedule and regularly brings some of the top cybersecurity experts from around the world to The Big Apple to talk about the problems plaguing both businesses and consumers, the latest cyber security research and developments in the infosec space.HOPE also a long track record of highlighting the human and social elements of “cyber” – highlighting the abuse of technology to facilitate censorship and surveillance, while giving a stage to whistleblowers, leakers and others calling out abuses by government and the private sector.
In short…its a scene! And one focused on building a better future. That’s why we here at SRFF are thrilled to announce that we’ll be speaking at this weekend’s HOPE XV Conference at St. John’s University in Queens. Our talk is EOL…RLY? Ending the Epidemic of Bricked and Abandoned Devices and takes place Saturday afternoon at 4PM.
In it, SRFF board members Lodrina Cherne of SANS Institute, Paul Roberts of Security Ledger and John Bumstead of RDKL Inc. will be joined by Lucas Gutterman, the head of US PIRG’s Designed to Last campaign. Together, we’ll talk about the social, environmental and cybersecurity consequences of the tidal wave of end of life (EOL) devices washing over homes, businesses and public sector organizations and leading to an epidemic of both cyber attacks and e-waste.
Along with HOPE attendees, we’ll talk about possible solutions to this problem, including both technological and policy-based fixes that provide protections for consumers and the environment.
You can attend our session in person or virtually. To learn more, visit the HOPE Website!
